Zoho Books vs Tally in the UAE: VAT, eInvoicing and cost
Zoho Books and TallyPrime compared for UAE businesses: VAT returns, eInvoicing, corporate tax, where your data lives, and what each one costs.
If your business runs on Tally, UAE eInvoicing is a natural moment to ask whether it should stay there. You have to appoint an Accredited Service Provider before your deadline, prepare your data and train your team. If you were ever going to change accounting systems, this is when the work overlaps.
We are a Zoho partner, not a Tally partner, so read this with that in mind. Everything below comes from what each vendor publishes, checked on 21 October 2026, and we say where Tally is the better fit.
The short answer
Stay on Tally if your accounts are run by one or two people at the office, you are already on TallyPrime with an active subscription, and what you need is VAT returns and eInvoicing. Tally now covers both. If you are in the first eInvoicing phase, do not change systems in the weeks before go-live.
Consider Zoho Books if your team works from more than one place or on the phone, you want sales, stock and payroll connected to your books, or you want the corporate tax return figures prepared inside the accounting system.

VAT returns: a draw
Both systems produce the VAT 201 return from your transactions and send it to EmaraTax without re-keying. In Zoho Books you connect to EmaraTax with your FTA login, compare each box with what the portal holds, lock the period and submit (Zoho). In TallyPrime you log in to EmaraTax through your browser from inside the software and upload the return for the period (Tally).
Neither will fix a wrong setup. A customer saved with the wrong tax treatment, or an item on the wrong rate, reaches the return in either system. That configuration is where returns go wrong, not the filing button.
eInvoicing: both are accredited
This is the change most comparisons have not caught up with. The Ministry of Finance's list of Accredited Service Providers had 72 entries on 21 October 2026, and both vendors are on it: Zoho Software Trading LLC (no. 121988) and Tally Software Solutions FZCO (no. 162503). Either way, the company behind your accounting software can also be your ASP, so invoices go from your books to the network without a separate connector.
In TallyPrime, eInvoicing needs TallyPrime 7.1. You appoint Tally as your ASP through EmaraTax, starting from inside TallyPrime, with your Tally.NET ID and EmaraTax login (Tally). Tally's July 2026 announcement says customers on the latest release with an active TSS subscription can use it, with Tally absorbing the cost of generating eInvoices, and Tally lists connected VAT returns and eInvoicing for the UAE among the benefits of TSS (Tally).
In Zoho Books, eInvoicing is an add-on for the Professional plan and above. The first 100 transactions are free, then one-time packs run from AED 41 for 100 to AED 20,000 for 100,000 (Zoho). We cover how it works in UAE eInvoicing in Zoho Books.
On cost per invoice, Tally's offer is hard to beat. The bigger job is the same in both systems: customer TRNs, tax treatments, units and item codes that pass validation on every invoice. That is the work in our eInvoicing data checklist, and it does not change with the software.
The deadlines do not change either. Businesses with revenue of AED 50 million or more must appoint an ASP by 30 October 2026 and go live on 1 January 2027. Everyone else appoints by 31 March 2027 and goes live on 1 July 2027.
Corporate tax
Zoho Books has a Corporate Tax module on the Professional plan and above. You enter your corporate tax registration number, choose the accounts used in the calculation, and it generates the return figures for the year and records the payment. You still file in EmaraTax and mark the return as filed (Zoho).
Tally's UAE material positions its financial reports, starting from the accounting net profit, as the basis for the calculation (Tally). We did not find a dedicated corporate tax return feature in Tally's help documentation.
In both, the result is only as good as the chart of accounts. Entertainment, fines, donations and owner drawings each need their own account, because the law treats them differently.
Where your data lives
Zoho Books runs in the cloud. Your team signs in from a browser or the mobile apps, and each plan includes a set number of users: 3 on Standard, 5 on Professional, 10 on Premium and Elite, and 15 on Ultimate. Extra users cost AED 8 each a month. Each company is a separate organisation with its own subscription.
TallyPrime is installed software. Silver is a single-user edition for one PC, Gold is unlimited multi-user across several PCs, and Tally says one installation handles unlimited companies. Its TSS subscription adds browser access to reports, online data sync and cloud backup through TallyDrive (Tally). Tally is driven from the keyboard, and many accountants are fast in it. That matters when one person posts most of the entries.
What each costs
Prices as published on 21 October 2026:
| Zoho Books (per organisation, before VAT) | TallyPrime | |
|---|---|---|
| Lowest paid plan | Standard: AED 60 a month billed yearly, with no eInvoicing add-on | Silver, one PC: AED 78 a month or AED 936 a year |
| Small team | Professional: AED 90 a month billed yearly, 5 users | Gold, several PCs: AED 234 a month or AED 2,808 a year |
| Larger | Premium AED 120, Elite AED 280, Ultimate AED 660 a month billed yearly | Lifetime licence: Silver AED 2,340, Gold AED 7,020, each with a year of TSS |
| Renewals | Included in the subscription | TSS after the first year: Silver AED 842, Gold AED 2,527 a year |
Zoho's prices exclude local taxes. Tally's price page does not say whether VAT is included (Zoho, Tally).
For a business with one company and five people in the accounts, that is AED 1,080 a year on Zoho Books Professional, plus eInvoicing packs after the first 100 transactions. On TallyPrime Gold it is AED 2,808 a year on subscription, or AED 7,020 up front and AED 2,527 a year for TSS. For a single user, Tally Silver at AED 936 a year is cheaper than Zoho Professional at AED 1,080, the lowest Zoho plan with eInvoicing.
In our experience the software is rarely the largest cost. Setup, data cleanup and training are.
Moving from Tally to Zoho Books
Zoho publishes a migration guide for Tally users. You export four things from Tally: the stock summary, the master data, the voucher data and the trial balance. In Zoho Books they become the chart of accounts, contacts, items, opening balances and transactions.
Three points decide whether it goes smoothly:
- Pick a clean cut-off. The start of a financial year is best, the start of a VAT period at least. Opening balances come from the trial balance at the cut-off date.
- Clean the masters before you move them. Duplicate customers, items without codes and missing TRNs travel with the data. Fix them in Tally first, and you fix your eInvoicing data at the same time.
- Keep Tally readable. Corporate tax records have to be kept for seven years after the end of each tax period (Article 56). Do not let the old system become unreadable when you stop using it.
If your revenue is AED 50 million or more and you are on Tally today, our advice is to appoint your ASP and go live on what you have. Plan the move for after go-live, not before.
Which one is right for you
Both systems now cover the UAE essentials: VAT returns to EmaraTax and eInvoicing through an accredited provider. The choice comes down to how your business works. Tally suits a finance team that works at the office and wants low running costs. Zoho Books suits a business that wants its books connected to sales, stock and payroll and open to the team wherever they work.
If you are weighing a move, book a free consultation. We will look at your Tally data and your eInvoicing deadline with you, and tell you honestly whether moving to Zoho Books makes sense now, later or not at all.
